arg, $720+ of repairs later, my car should be good to go (not counting the odometer and blower motor, neither of which are critical to its road safety, and both of which I'm hoping to be able to repair with Jack's help.) Turns out there was a bad rear suspension, two bald tires on front (i'm going to have them replace all 4, which will up this number a bit, and possibly have them sipe them for me), and bad motor mounts. The rest of the car checks out, according to the mechanic.

I'm basically looking at it as the $1100 I paid for the car as a sunk cost. There's no way I can recover that money, so it's still cheaper to repair it than to get another car. At least now I know that it probably wasn't due to my driving that we spun out on dry pavement (I even called my friend with a masters in physics.) The car should be ready on Wednesday but I'm really scared of driving for now, and severely beating myself up because I could have killed someone due to not getting the car checked out before I bought it. I'm a fucking idiot.

i almost died this evening.

On Thursday, I bought a 1988 volvo station wagon. it is my first car. I took my friend, who is really good with cars, with me to go test drive it. I got insurance for it yesterday and also got AAA. today we replaced the turn signal relay on it and went to get the oil changed and get the interior cleaned. then we decided to go down to Wilsonville to get a new stereo for it at Fry's.

on I-5 I somehow lost control of the car and managed to spin it all the way around into a shallow ditch on the right hand shoulder. neither my friend nor I were hurt and the car was barely even scratched (volvos are fricking tanks.) I got it towed to my coworker's mechanic (smart idea for me to get AAA.) i'm really hoping it's a mechanical problem cause I really don't think I'm an awful driver. i tend to sometimes have some driving anxiety even without this sort of thing and now i pretty much feel like hiding in my house forever. way to go me.

Subject:EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY IS CRAZY
Time:03:43 pm
my only surviving grandparent, who I rarely talk to, sent me this in the mail.

I'm really tempted to write "Beth is of the opinion that her personal life is not up for discussion." on the back and send it back to her, but it would probably just be best to ignore it. Seriously, it's stuff like this that makes me want to change my name when I graduate and move to Rhode Island or something.

so apparently asking my so-called boyfriend to talk to me when I was depressed (instead of working for his family til 10 p.m. every night for two weeks) was crimping his style and I was trying to control him by doing that. Yup, single again. he dumped me by e-mail and now he won't talk to me. now I have no idea what my plans are after graduation (I was originally going to Ecuador to see him) and that is stressful, along with an 18 credit summer term and working half-time.

oh not to mention this is the bipolar boyfriend who came and lived with me for four months and whenever he had issues i had to drop EVERYTHING to deal with him. but i have problems for once and i am controlling him by asking him to support me?

This is why the rest of the world hates us. What next, "Christian" pharmacies refusing to stock antidepressants because depression is a "spiritual" problem?

This is what my vision looks like when I'm about to get a migraine:

doesn't that look FUN? actually since I started taking medication, I mostly just get the visual symptoms now without the puking and intense pain, but I still feel sort of nauseous and have to go home..

"It seems rather silly that anyone would think that providing girls a form of protection from a disease would entice millions of them to increase their sexual behavior. Then again, wearing seat belts and helmets do cause millions of drivers of cars and motorcycles to increase their speed."

Today I learned the Spanish words for ace (as), manhole (coladera), gauze (gasa) and loincloth (taparrabos). Just in case you were wondering how to say any of those things.

uta, ayer vi a un tipo llevando un taparrabos con gasa sobre los ojos.. le vi caer por una coladera! qué as!

hey, yesterday I saw this guy wearing a loincloth with gauze over his eyes. I saw him fall down a manhole! what an ace!

I know this is kind of turning into my dog blog, but I just wanted to share one of those great ah ha moments in dog training..

Foco just figured out that he can ring the bells hanging on my doorknob even when I'm halfway across the house, and that I'll take him out. :-) I did and he immediately peed.

Also, he has slept in my bed for the past month and a half, and hasn't had any accidents during the night. He's only had one accident (that I can remember) during the day in the past two months, and that was my fault. Well, actually, if you're housetraining properly, ALL accidents are your fault.

He's crated while I'm gone without incident (and will probably have to be crated for the rest of his life when I'm not around, as he is a sneaky beast.)

It's only taken six months of diligent and borderline obsessive house training to get to this point. :-P (He eliminated inside for 4 months wherever he pleased while he was sick with the Ecuavet, so that was a hard habit to break.) I still don't trust him anywhere other than my room without a leash.
